history of deens
Born in Kashmir, Deens traces its origins to a land of breathtaking valleys, lush meadows, and serene lakes. Nestled in the Himalayas, this region has long been revered for its natural beauty. Against this majestic backdrop, our forefathers began trading hand-knotted carpets woven from fine silk, cashmere, and Himalayan wool.
Established in 1935, Deens evolved from a luxury retailer serving British aristocrats and prominent families in India into a global exporter reaching homes across Europe and the United States. This evolution was shaped by Badr Deen Banday, whose vision was to create exceptional carpets for the world. Following the partition of India in 1947, he relocated to Pakistan, where he founded the Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association and served as its first president, helping shape the country’s emerging carpet industry. Together with his three sons, he built a legacy of integrity and craftsmanship, cementing the Deens brand as a symbol of excellence.
Today, every piece reflects this enduring pursuit. From first sketch to final knot, our work is brought to life by skilled artisans. We collaborate with select manufacturers who meet uncompromising standards of quality. Equity, fair wages, ethical practices, creative expression, and the empowerment of artisans, particularly women, remain central to our ethos. Our products are produced without forced or child labor, with respect for animal welfare and environmental responsibility. Natural fibers, recycled materials, and plant-based dyes are used wherever possible, reflecting our sustainability pledge.

Path forward
Building on his family’s legacy, Sal Banday, grandson of Badr, opened his boutique studio at the Boston Design Center to create a more personal, relationship-driven experience where every client connection truly matters. After moving to the United States in 1994 for higher education, he earned business degrees from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Harvard. He later held senior management roles in corporate America and completed a certificate at MIT in digital transformation.
With a passion for art and innovation, Sal returned to the family business, bringing his experience to the expansion of its showroom presence. Focused on understanding and meeting customer needs, he continues to evolve the brand in service of its community, serving clients across the United States.
At Deens, we believe great interior design begins from the ground up. The floor establishes a room’s character, purpose, and atmosphere. Our collections are curated to be the perfect companion to these elements, bringing balance, beauty, and a sense of well-being.
