history of deens

Deens Carpets Founder

Born in Kashmir, Deens draws its origins from a land of breathtaking valleys, lush meadows, and serene lakes. Nestled in the Himalayas, this region has long been renowned for its beautiful landscapes. This is where it all began. Generations ago, our forefathers set out as merchants of hand-knotted carpets, crafted from fine wool and luminous silk.

Founded in 1935, the business grew from a luxury retailer serving British aristocrats and prominent families in India into a global exporter, reaching homes across Europe and the United States. This transformation was led by Badr Deen Banday, whose simple yet ambitious vision was to create exceptional carpets for the world. After the partition of India in 1947, he moved to Pakistan, where he founded the Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association and became its first president, helping shape the country’s carpet industry in its early years. Over time, alongside his three sons, the family name came to stand for craftsmanship, quality, and understated luxury.

Today, every rug we produce reflects that same dedication. From the first sketch to the final knot, our designs are brought to life by skilled artisans who have honed their craft over generations. We also collaborate with select high-end manufacturers who share our quest for excellence. We believe in fair wages, safe working conditions, and supporting the communities behind the craft, especially women artisans. Our rugs are produced without forced or child labor, with respect for animal welfare, and with care for the environment. By using natural fibers, recycled materials, and plant-based dyes, we aim to create pieces that are not only beautiful but responsibly made.

Deens Carpets Leadership

Path forward

Building on a rich family heritage, Sal Banday, grandson of Badr, established his studio in the Boston Design Center to provide a truly personalized shopping experience. In 1994, Sal moved to the U.S. to pursue higher education, earning business degrees from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Harvard. He later held senior management positions in corporate America and completed a certificate at MIT focused on digital transformation.

With a passion for the arts, Sal returned to the family business, combining his love for product design and development with growing the company’s retail presence. Committed to understanding and meeting customer needs, he continually refines the brand to better serve them.

At Deens, we believe great interior design begins from the ground up. The floor establishes a room’s character, purpose, and atmosphere. Our collections are designed to enhance these elements, bringing balance, beauty, and a lasting sense of well-being to every space.
